A gift for our new and renewing members, our Artist Edition Series focuses on sharing the most exciting talents from emerging markets in countries all over the world. The artists we partner with for this series are committed to innovation, growth and participating in a global discourse. We hope that by bringing their work to you we can shine a light both on the artists themselves and on the cities in which they work, which are often dynamic sites of artistic production.

"Butterfly Effect" by Xiuching Tsay
Tsay is currently based between the United Kingdom and Thailand, where she was born. Tsay is inspired by the patterns of natural networks, animals, plant anatomy systems, light and sound vibrations and the evolution of human communication technology. Expressed within these connections is the mix of physics and the concept of the spiritual law of attraction, coupled with the artist’s own existential narratives that she finds mysterious. Tsay explores the existential transformations that can be triggered by the evolution of communication in mainstream society, including the eccentrics behind the shared space - the habitat of all beings.

“When the petals fall they don’t wither " by Juwon Aderemi
Juwon (b. 2000) is a Nigerian-born artist whose work revolves around surrealistic figures and abstract realism, exploring themes rooted in the culture and beliefs of his Nigerian Yoruba heritage. He approaches his art intuitively, with an emphasis on portraiture that reflects his cultural background. Aderemi engages with intellectual discourses drawn from African and West African folklore and literature, prioritising imagery that encourages inward reflection rather than seeking external validation, status, or value. Utilising oil and charcoal on canvas, he contemplates the essence of the human condition, expressing a desire to harmonise ancient traditions with contemporary life, particularly through the lens of gender and beauty in Nigerian culture.

"Noren" by Alexa Hatanaka
Alexa (b.1988) is a Japanese-Canadian artist based in Toronto, whose queer and disabled identity significantly inform her practice. The recurring motifs of landscapes, fish, and bodies of water reflect personal and collective narratives of struggle and resilience. Her work is shaped by experience -based research, including long-term community-engaged projects in the high Arctic and performances that integrate ‘kamiko’ garments (made from Japanese paper). Through collaboration, she examines the intersections of community, environment, and cultural heritage.
