Cultivist Picks to Celebrate 100 Years of Surrealism

The art movement of Surrealism was born in 1924 when André Breton published his radical manifesto which rejected realism and rationality. His fervent ideas surrounding the power of dreams as liberating forces sparked a century of surreal art.
To mark Surrealism's centennial, museums internationally are highlighting its lasting impact. From Caribbean and African Diasporic artists to Eastern European Surrealism, here are the key exhibitions to see worldwide.
Paris: ‘Imagine! 100 Years of International Surrealism’, at Centre Pompidou (4 Sep 2024 - 13 Jan 2025)
The Pompidou Center in Paris, home to one of the largest French Surrealist art collections, has organised a major travelling exhibition. It opened in Brussels in February, and will move to Paris, Hamburg, Madrid, and finally the Philadelphia Museum of Art in 2026.
Shanghai: ‘Fantastic Visions:100 Years of Surrealism from the National Galleries of Scotland’, at Museum of Art Pudong (through 31 Aug 2024)
A showcase of 100 major works by 50 renowned surrealists, including Salvador Dalí, René Magritte, and Joan Miró which are being displayed in China for the first time.
Wakefield, UK: ‘Forbidden Territories: 100 Years of Surreal Landscapes’ at Hepworth Wakefield (Nov 2024 - 27 Apr 2025)
