Discover Korea’s Art and Seoul
03 Jan 2025This spring (29 May 2025 - 04 Jun 2025), Club members will head off on a seven-day exploration of Korea. Starting in the energetic capital of Seoul and continuing to the coastal city of Busan, we’ll immerse ourselves in the country’s rich blend of art, history, and culture.
EAT & SLEEP
In Seoul, we’ll stay at the Four Seasons Hotel Seoul, a striking 29-story gem designed by Su Sin Tao of Singapore. Inspired by traditional Korean palaces yet reimagined for the modern era, this hotel blends the old and new beautifully. Keep an eye out for the lobby’s circular fireplace, cast in an ancient bronze map of Korea, showcasing the country’s mountains, rivers, and villages. Throughout the hotel, over 130 works by Korean artists are on display, including a stunning installation by Ran Hwang—a three-dimensional Korean ship made from hundreds of ivory-coloured buttons.
Foodies will be in for a treat with dinner at Michelin-starred Mingles, where Chef Kang Min-goo elevates Korean cuisine with elegant simplicity. We’ll also enjoy an authentic Korean experience at Miro Sikdang, known for its cosy atmosphere and its signature dish, tteokbokki.
STEP BACK IN TIME
We’ll step into Korea’s royal past with a private VIP tour of Gyeongbokgung Palace, the largest of Seoul’s Five Grand Palaces. Built in 1395, the palace’s traditional architecture and serene gardens are set against the backdrop of Mount Bugaksan.
A private tour of the Leeum Museum of Art offers a rare chance to experience works spanning centuries, from ancient ceramics to contemporary pieces. Designed by celebrated architects Mario Botta, Jean Nouvel, and Rem Koolhaas, the museum is a landmark in itself. Among the highlights will be Louise Bourgeois’ monumental spider sculpture ‘Maman’ and Olafur Eliasson’s impressive light installation ‘Gravity Stairs’.
CONTEMPORARY PERSPECTIVES
In Busan, we’ll visit the Museum of Contemporary Art located on the picturesque Eulsukdo Island, known for its birdlife and reed fields. The museum’s eco-conscious design sets the stage for dynamic exhibitions, with installations and multimedia works reflecting societal themes and artistic innovation.
Another highlight is Space Lee Ufan, nestled within the Busan Museum of Art. Dedicated to minimalist artist Lee Ufan, the space showcases his meditative works that explore the relationship between material and emptiness. Known for his subtle yet profound creations, Lee Ufan’s works offer a tranquil, reflective experience.
MEET THE ARTISTS
The journey includes exclusive studio visits with leading artists like Sun Woo, Haena Yoo, Heecheon Kim, Yooyun Yang, and Haneyl Choi. These intimate sessions offer a rare opportunity to hear directly from the artists about their inspirations and creative processes.
