The Sagrario Series, captured in collodion, wet-plate photography, documents a performance piece in which the artist revolved a fabric-covered female body in a way evoking the metamorphosis of a butterfly followed by its emergence from the cocoon. In reality, the butterfly’s movement of breaking out of its binding structure is uncomfortable and awkward, and Pizzani makes a connection here not just to womanhood, but to birth, puberty and adolescence. She captures an organic and feminine form with a strong sculptural aspect inspired by still life photography, returning to the monochrome origins of the medium.
