Begun in 2005, Jamal Cyrus’s Pride Records series develops the history of a fictional record label. In Cyrus’s account, Pride Records was founded in Detroit in 1967, a moment of great energy and innovation in the Black community. While Pride’s earliest releases engaged with issues of civil rights and Black Pride, the label shifted toward apolitical and even counter-revolutionary content in the 1970s under the influence of the FBI, which at that time was infiltrating Black literary and musical circles. In developing the history of Pride Records, Cyrus explores very real historical developments and cultural shifts. The edition 6 Minutes Till Nation Time !!! is conceived as the cover of an early Pride Records release, featuring a mixed media collage that fearlessly celebrates the spirit of protest and resistance.
